Book Playlist: This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales

I couldn't read a book like This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales and NOT playlist it now could I? Now that book is full of awesome, cool, old-school indie music and I'm just rubbish at discovering that kind of stuff, so this playlist probably doesn't fit the book much in terms of genre, but I chose songs where I think the lyrics and message resonate with Elise's story. And some songs about music and dancing. Enjoy!

Hook Me Up by The Veronicas

I'm tired of my life, I feel so in between
I'm sick of all my friends, girls can be so mean
I feel like throwing out everything I wear
I'm starting over new, 'cos Im not even there
Sometimes, I wanna get away some place
But I don't wanna stay too long
Sometimes, I wanna brand new day
Try to fit in where I don't belong

Nobody's Home by Avril Lavigne

Well I couldn't tell you why she felt that way,
She felt it everyday.
And I couldn't help her,
I just watched her make the same mistakes again.

What's wrong, what's wrong now?
Too many, too many problems.
Don't know where she belongs, where she belongs.
She wants to go home, but nobody's home.
It's where she lies, broken inside.
With no place to go, no place to go to dry her eyes.
Broken inside.

I am Not a Robot by Marina & the Diamonds

Better to be hated than loved, loved, love for what you're not
You're vulnerable, you're vulnerable
You are not a robot
You're lovable, so lovable
But you're just troubled

Guess what? I'm not a robot, a robot

New In Town by Little Boots

Heard you're new in town, want someone to show you 'round
Well, no one knows this place just quite like me
Well, I don't hang with the crowd, where I go we're dressing down
I'll take you where the music plays for free

Nights Like This by Icona Pop

High on every sound, all the lights are down
With nothing to say on mind, I wanna stop the time.
And nights like this we own,
And you will never be alone

I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor by Arctic Monkeys

I said I bet that you look good on the dancefloor
Dancing to electro-pop like a robot from 1984
From 1984...

Oh there ain't no love no, Montagues or Capulets
We just banging tunes 'n' DJ sets 'n'
Dirty dancefloors and dreams of naughtyness

Sometime Around Midnight by The Airborne Toxic Event

And it starts
Sometime around midnight
Or at least that's when you lose yourself
For a minute or two

As you stand
Under the bar lights
And the band plays some song about forgetting yourself for a while
And the piano's this melancholy soundtrack to her smile

About the book:

Plot summary:  All her life, Elise Dembowski has been an outsider. Starting a new school, she dreams of fitting in at last – but when her best attempts at popularity fail, she almost gives up. Then she stumbles upon a secret warehouse party. There, at night, Elise can be a different person, making real friends, falling in love for the first time, and finding her true passion – DJ’ing.
But when her real and secret lives collide, she has to make a decision once and for all: just who is the real Elise?

An irresistible novel about hope, heartbreak and the power of music to bring people together.
